What Final Expense Insurance Covers

Final expense insurance is a whole life policy meant to pay for a funeral and other end-of-life costs. It pays out less than a regular life insurance policy, and in return the premium stays low and approval is easier.

What a policy gives you:

  • A monthly premium that stays level on most whole life final expense policies
  • Whole life coverage with no end date
  • Cash value that grows over time on most whole life policies
  • Money paid straight to the people you name
  • Coverage that stays in force while you pay the premium

With a level-premium policy, the rate is locked in when you're approved. Getting older or getting sick won't raise it, as long as you keep paying. If your health rules out other policies, a guaranteed-issue policy is an option. It asks no health questions and costs more, and in the first two years it usually pays only a partial benefit.

Also called burial insurance

Burial insurance, funeral insurance and final expense insurance are the same kind of policy. If you have Medicare in St. Louis, keep in mind that Medicare pays nothing toward a funeral or burial.

What a Funeral Costs in the St. Louis Area

Funeral prices have gone up for years. The National Funeral Directors Association put the national median for a funeral with a viewing and burial at about $8,300 in 2023. That number doesn't include the cemetery plot or the headstone. St. Louis funeral homes charge different amounts depending on the service and what the family picks, so ask each one for an itemized price list.

$8,000+

What the bill usually covers:

  • Funeral home services and staff
  • A casket or urn
  • Embalming and other preparation
  • A viewing and memorial service
  • A cemetery plot and burial charges
  • A headstone or grave marker
  • Transportation, death certificates and paperwork

A simple service still adds up

Without a policy, families often pay with savings, credit cards or an online fundraiser. A final expense policy puts the money in place ahead of time.

Burial Insurance in St. Louis: How a Policy Works

Whatever you call it, the policy does one thing: it pays for the funeral and burial so your family doesn't have to.

Amounts people often choose:

  • $5,000
  • $10,000
  • $15,000
  • $20,000

The money can pay for:

  • The funeral service
  • Burial or cremation
  • Leftover medical bills
  • Any other bills you leave behind

The people you name decide how to spend it.

Why St. Louis Seniors Buy Final Expense Coverage

People buy it so their spouse or kids won't have to find thousands of dollars in the same week they're planning a funeral.

You can apply over the phone, and on a level-premium policy the price is set from day one.

Your age when you apply sets the premium, so buying sooner costs less

Whole life coverage lasts as long as you pay the premium

Common questions

Final expense questions from St. Louis families

Is final expense insurance the same thing as burial insurance?
Yes. Final expense, burial and funeral insurance are three names for one product, a small whole life policy that pays for a funeral and other end-of-life costs.
Does the premium go up as I age?
Not on a level-premium whole life policy. The premium is set when the policy is issued and stays the same while you keep paying. Some policies work differently, so we check how the premium is set before you apply.
What does guaranteed issue mean?
A guaranteed-issue policy asks no health questions, so if you're within the eligible ages, your health can't get you turned down. You pay more for each dollar of coverage, and most of these policies have a graded benefit. If you die of natural causes in the first two years, the policy usually returns the premiums plus interest in place of the full benefit.
Will I need a medical exam?
Usually not. Many final expense policies ask a few health questions and skip the exam. How you answer decides which policies and prices you can get.
Will Medicare pay for a funeral?
No. Medicare pays for medical care and nothing toward a funeral or burial. For health coverage, see Medicare in St. Louis.
How is this different from a preneed contract with a funeral home?
A preneed contract is an agreement you sign with a funeral home to arrange and pay for services ahead of time. Missouri regulates these contracts under its own preneed law, and preneed sellers are licensed through the State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors. A final expense policy is life insurance. It pays your beneficiary in cash, and they decide how to use it. Some families have both.
Who gets the money, and what can it pay for?
The person you name as beneficiary gets the death benefit. They can spend it on the funeral, burial or cremation, medical bills, or anything else.
