Medicare Part B Late Enrollment Penalty Calculator

If you don't sign up for Part B when you first qualify, and you don't have coverage from a job you or your spouse still works at, Medicare charges a late enrollment penalty. It's added to your monthly premium, and for most people it stays for life.

Use the calculator below for a quick estimate. Then read the notes under it to see whether the penalty applies to you at all.

  • 10% added for each full 12 months without Part B
  • The extra charge usually lasts as long as you have Part B
  • Coverage from a current job can protect you

Context

When the penalty applies

You're protected while you have group health coverage from a current job, yours or your spouse's. Retiree coverage, COBRA and marketplace plans don't count. When that job ends, you get an eight-month Special Enrollment Period to sign up for Part B with no penalty.

Drug coverage has a penalty of its own. If you're thinking about waiting on anything, read about Part D drug plans as well, and look over the mistakes to avoid. For free counseling in Missouri, Missouri SHIP takes calls at 800-390-3330.
