Medicare in Kirkwood

Medicare notes for Kirkwood

Kirkwood had 29,461 residents in the 2020 census, and its downtown farmers' market has run since 1976. The closest big hospitals are on Ballas Road. Missouri Baptist Medical Center, part of BJC, is at 3015 N. Ballas. Mercy Hospital St. Louis is a few miles south at 615 S. New Ballas. Veterans often use the VA campus at Jefferson Barracks in South County.

Two hospitals from two systems on the same road is the reason to check networks by name. A Medicare Advantage plan may include BJC doctors and leave out Mercy ones, or the other way around, and the lists can change each January. If your heart doctor is at Mercy and your surgeon is at Missouri Baptist, make sure both are in the plan before you sign. A Medicare Supplement such as Plan G or Plan N skips that question, since it works with any doctor in the country who takes Medicare. You pay a higher monthly premium for that, and you add a separate Part D drug plan.

Metro gives half fare on MetroBus and MetroLink to riders 65 and older and to anyone with a Medicare card, through a Reduced Fare Permit. The Transit Access Center that issues permits moved to the North County Transit Center on Pershall Road in May 2026. Call ADA Services at 314-982-1510 before you go. Riders who can't use the regular bus because of a disability can apply for Call-A-Ride vans at 314-982-1505.

Close to home, the Kirkwood Public Library on East Jefferson Avenue mails books to homebound readers and helps with technology. The Shepherd's Center of Webster/Kirkwood runs programs for adults 55 and older. Aging Ahead, the Area Agency on Aging for St. Louis County, handles Meals on Wheels and caregiver help. For free one-on-one counseling, call Missouri SHIP. When you want plan prices for your ZIP code, call us for a free review.

Common questions

What Kirkwood callers ask us

Can one plan cover both Missouri Baptist and Mercy?
With a Medicare Supplement, yes, as long as each doctor accepts Medicare. With a Medicare Advantage plan, it depends on that plan's network for the year. Give us the names of your doctors and hospitals and we'll check each one.
Does my Medicare card get me a bus discount?
It qualifies you, but you still need a Metro Reduced Fare Permit to ride at half fare. Riders 65 and older can also qualify with a photo ID that shows their age. Call Metro ADA Services at 314-982-1510 to get started.
When can I change my Medicare plan in Kirkwood?
Annual Enrollment runs October 15 to December 7, and anyone with Medicare can switch then. People already in a Medicare Advantage plan get one more change from January 1 to March 31, during Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment.
